Botulinum Toxin Type A

A number of factors such as free radical damage, UV radiation and loss of collagen and elastin can cause wrinkle formation. Even normal facial expressions lead to constant muscle movement and this causes the overlying skin to lose its elasticity also resulting in the formation of frown lines and wrinkles. Botox is an injectable purified protein made from botulinum toxin type A, which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which causes the muscles to contract. This ability to “freeze” the muscle temporarily, is what makes Botox so effective at treating the muscles of facial expression and preventing the formation of wrinkles.

Used in very little amounts to treat and prevent the development of frown lines and wrinkles, but also excessive sweating, migraines as well as teeth grinding, Botulinum Toxin type A is injected into the target area to block the nerve impulses from activating the muscle contractions. This results in a smoother relaxed skin and muscles as they do not contract as before. Most patients see an improvement within three to five days, with full effect after 10 days and the results can last up to four months, although results may vary.
