Oxidative stress
Free radicals are unstable molecules that are produced and build up every day in our cells as by-products of cell metabolism. These free radicals damage the cell structures, preventing them from working properly. Free radical production is also directly related to external factors such as UV radiation or lifestyle: smoking, stress or unbalanced diet.

Glycation
Damage by oxidative stress is caused inside the cells, whereas glycation happens around them, more specifically in the collagen fibres supporting our skin, found in the extracellular matrix. When there is excess glucose in this matrix, it binds with the proteins in the collagen fibres, hardening them and making them less elastic and resistant. This process is called glycation. From age 40 and upwards, our body is not able to effectively regulate excess sugar in the tissues or repair the damaged collagen, increasing the damage caused by glycation.

DNA damage 
DNA, which is found in the cell nucleus, contains all the genetic information that controls the cell functions. Therefore, a cell with damaged DNA cannot function properly.
